U-21(B) Western hurling championship final Congratulations to our U-21 hurlers who won the Western U-21(B) hurling championship final when they defeated Brickey Rangers by two points in Cappoquin on Friday evening last April 16th. Deise Development Draw The 2010 Deise Development Draw the proceeds of which are going towards paying off the debt on the floodlighting and field development work, will begin on Friday next March 26th. In the 2009 Deise Draw we had a winner of the top prize of €10,000 when Breda and Denis Drislane won in the May Draw. U-21 (B) Football We played Cois Bride on Friday last February 26th in the Western U-21 football championship in Ballyduff. The final score was Ballyduff0-8 Cois Bride 3-10. Panel was Jack Herring, David Walsh, Maurice McNamara, Tomás Moroney, Jamie Hannon, Alex Noonan, James Daly, Colm Horgan, Eoin Hogan, Eoin Scanlon, Shane Kearney, Thomas Noonan, Kevin Casey, Liam Byrne, Bernard Flynn, Thomas Keane and William Keane. Adult Scór The adult Scór County finals held in the Town Hall in Dungarvan on Saturday night last. The Set Dancing was won by Carmel Flynn, Ann Tobin, Geraldine Tobin, Lisa Daly, P.J. McGrath, Mossy Casey, Thomas Hyland and Roy Flynn and the quiz team with Michael Drislane, Michael Leamy and Conor Geary also won and both teams have now qualified for the Munster Finals which will be held in Milstreet Co. Cork on Sunday next March 7th at 3.00pm. Kevin Martin competed in the solo singing and a second quiz team of Sean Ryan, Paddy John Feeney and Eugen Flynn finished second. Players Meeting A players meeting will be held in St. Michael’s Hall on Friday night next January 29th at 8.00pm. All players are requested to attend. Pa Kearney Benevolent Fund Presentation On Thursday night last January 21st the West Waterford Darts League chairman Tommy O’Sullivan presented a cheque for €2,000 for the PA Kearney Benevolent Fund to club treasurer Pat Flynn in The Paddocks Bar. This was the proceeds of a fundraiser held by the league on Saturday January 16th in Tigh An Cheoil. Thanks to all the teams who participated in the event, to our local darts club and The Paddocks Bar for their support and also those who sponsored auction and raffle prizes. Thanks to Tommy O’Sullivan and Jimmy Quinn for organising the tournament and to the proprietor of Tigh an Cheoil Sean Óg McGrath. Annual General Meeting Adult Club AGM The Annual General Meeting of Ballyduff adult GAA Club was held on Friday night last January 15th in St. Michael’s Hall. A large attendance which included many younger members was welcomed by Club Chairman Maurice Geary. Treasurer Pat Flynn delivered a comprehensive account of the club finances and thanked those who supported the weekly lotto and complimented all members of the Deise Development Draw for their support as this is the main source of funding for the field development work during the past year. He appealed to all members to continue this support in 2010 as we endeavour to complete development work in the field. He thanked all our sponsors for their continued support with a special thank you to our main sponsor Kenneally Steel Fabrication Limited. Club secretary John Jackson once again gave a very detailed report on club activities both on and off the field in 2009. He complimented the players and management teams of all grades who represented the club throughout the year. Chairperson Maurice Geary gave his address and expressed his satisfaction at the big attendance at the meeting. Speaking about his fellow officers he complimented secretary John Jackson on the hard work he had done during the year and also for his very comprehensive and detailed report and treasurer Pat Flynn for his excellent management of the club finances once again. Geraldine Power was thanked for doing first aid for the adult and underage teams. He thanked all the players and members of the back room teams for their efforts in 2009 and asked that they show the same commitment throughout the coming year. Mike Leamy Chairman of the Juvenile Club was thanked for the great work being done at underage and assured them of the continued assistance of the adult club in their promotion of our games. He also thanked all those who assisted with the Pa Kearney Benevolent Fundraising efforts and especially everyone who had given their support to the quiz, entertainment night and raffle. Successful Entertainment night in aid of the Pa Kearney Benevolent Fund Our Entertainment Extravaganza last Saturday night December 12th was a great success with a large turnout from clubs and communities throughout Waterford and East Cork in aid of the Pa Kearney Fundraiser. Fundraisng Table Quiz a Success On Friday night last December 4th we hosted a table quiz with the proceeds going to the Benevolent Fund for Pa Kearney. The response surpassed all expectations as seventy five tables were needed to cater for the huge turnout. We would like to thank everyone who attended on the night for their patience while we set up in the three locations but especially for their tremendous support for the event. As a result we used the Log Cabin and the Paddocks as well as the original venue An Sibín. Results were: 1st Table 69 with 53 points Shane Feeney, Denis Twomey, John Conway and Kenneth Cashell. Joint 2nd were Table 23 with 52 points John Heneghan, Kieran O’Gorman, Conor Ryan and Paul McCormack and Table 41 Anne Kennedy, Bridget Taffee, Paul Kennedy and Jimmy Taffee. Lá Na gClub We want to say a special word of thanks to Joe Flynn who paid a visit to the club on Lá Na gClub Sunday May 10th and also for allowing us to display his 1948 Munster and All-Ireland Minor Hurling winning medals which he won with Waterford. Joe who was the goalkeeper on that Waterford Minor team and he also shared with us his memories of that special year. Sympathy We extend sympathy to the O’Brien Family on the death of Maurice O’Brien, High Road and Shean last weekend. Maurice played hurling and football with the club in 40s and 50s and was a member of the team that won a County and Western double in both Junior Hurling and Football in 1953. Sympathy is also extended to the family of the late Nora Clancy, McCurtain Street Fermoy and formerly of Kilmurray, Kilworth. Nora was a renowned camogie player who played with Waterford and in 1945 was on the county team that beat Tipperary and Clare to win the Munster Championship. Minor Hurling County Champions Div 4 Our minor hurlers won the inaugural Div 4 county minor hurling championship to end the season on a high note, when they defeated Kilrossanty in the Div 4 county final on Saturday last October 24th in Cappoquin. Kilrossanty playing with the aid of a strong wind in the first half were leading by four points to one when goalkeeper James Daly made an excellent save which was to prove a turning point in the game. From there on we never looked back and by half time we were just one point in arrears with the score Ballyduff 0-5 Kilrossanty 0-6. A great second half saw our lads concede just one point and they ran out deserving winners with the final score Ballyduff 2-13 Kilrossanty 0-7. Team was James Daly, Ian Kenneally, Sean Geary, Jamie Hannon, Alex Noonan (1-1), Tomás Moroney, William Keane, David Walsh (0-8), Eoin Hogan, Conor Geary (0-1), Eoin Scanoln (0-2) and Kevin Casey 1-1). Subs were Cailean Dunlea for Eoin Hogan, James Geary for Kevin Casey, Tommy Keane for Conor Geary, Paul Geary, Kayne Cunningham, Simon Dooling and Liam Byrne. While there were fine individual performances from James Daly, Alex Noonan, Conor Geary, Kevin Casey and David Walsh these were just part of what was a great team display and a credit to each player. Waterford Adult County Board Chairman Pat Flynn presented the cup to team captain Alex Noonan to the delight of his teammates and supporters. To the entire panel and to their management team Wayne Power (who viewed much of the second half from the upper deck of the stand from where he orchestrated some shrewd positional changes) and Jamie Kearney we say congratulations and well done for all the hard work put in during the year. Best Wishes We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Patrick (Pa) Kearney who was injured in an accident last weekend and also to Mike Hannon (The Paddocks Bar) who sustained serious injuries during the Fun Ride fundraiser for St. Michaels School the previous weekend. In a one sided game against a depleted Ring team the winning margin was twenty three points having led by eight points 2-7 to 0-5 at half time. Gaeltacht Scholarships Two club members Paul Martin and Seamas Hyland had successful interviews for Gaeltacht Scholarships recently.
